1. Product Overview

CloudCutter_E57 V1.1 Trial is a Windows application for previewing, inspecting, selecting, cutting, and converting large point-cloud files.

The current Trial supports:

Input:
- E57
- XYZ ASCII
- LAS

Output:
- E57
- XYZ ASCII
- LAS

CloudCutter can be used both as:

- a cutter for preparing selected parts of a point cloud;
- a converter between supported point-cloud formats;
- a preview and inspection tool for large source files.


2. Trial Licensing

CloudCutter Trial uses online activation.

The Trial is:

- valid for 30 days from the first organization activation;
- shared by the registered organization;
- available on up to 10 fixed devices;
- validated online at application startup;
- validated online before every export.

The Trial period does not restart when another device is activated.

A corporate, university, or student-university email address may be used for registration.

Public and disposable email domains may be rejected.

CloudCutter identifies the organization primarily by the verified email domain. If that domain is already registered, the application displays the existing canonical organization name before activation.

The user may:

- select OK to continue activation under the registered organization;
- select Cancel to stop activation.

No new device seat is assigned when activation is cancelled.


3. Device Session and Security

After successful activation, CloudCutter stores an encrypted device session in the current Windows user profile.

Typical location:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\VoxelStudio\CloudCutter\trial_license_v2.dat

The session is protected by Windows DPAPI.

Important:

- the session is not stored in the portable package;
- each Windows user profile has its own protected cache;
- replacing the EXE does not reset the cache;
- copying the cache to another device or Windows user does not work;
- the licensing server remains the authoritative source for Trial status.

The Trial version does not require:

- cloudcutter.lic
- request.txt

Those files belong to an older offline licensing workflow and must not be included in the Trial package.


4. Export Authorization

Before every export, CloudCutter automatically requests a short-lived, one-time authorization from the licensing server.

The authorization is:

- bound to the current device;
- bound to the exact export job;
- valid only for a short time;
- single-use;
- protected locally by Windows DPAPI.

Direct execution of an export job without authorization is blocked.

A short startup tolerance may be used only after a recent successful online validation and only for temporary network transport failures.

The tolerance never authorizes export.

Server rejection, expired Trial status, blocked access, or revoked device status cannot use the network tolerance.


5. Preview and Selection Workflow

Export is prepared from saved selections.

Supported saved selection types:

- saved top-view selections;
- saved vertical selections.

Temporary top-view tile selections are used only for interactive preparation and review before saving. They are not exported directly.

Typical workflow:

1. Open an E57, XYZ ASCII, or LAS source file.
2. Select the output folder.
3. Read file metadata.
4. Generate a Quick or Exact preview.
5. Inspect the point cloud in top, vertical, or interactive 3D view.
6. Prepare top-view and/or vertical selections.
7. Save the required selections.
8. Choose the output format and export mode.
9. Start export.
10. Verify the resulting file or files in an independent application.


6. Export Modes

The main export modes are:

- Single combined output file
- Several output files by saved selections

Several-file export may use:

- saved top-view selections;
- saved vertical selections;
- the available combination of saved selections, depending on the active workflow.

CloudCutter can also prepare and export many saved tiles or selections in one operation.

Where supported, the optimized multi-output path reads the source stream once and routes matching points to the required output files.


7. Format Conversion

Supported conversion matrix:

E57:
- E57 → E57
- E57 → XYZ ASCII
- E57 → LAS

XYZ ASCII:
- XYZ ASCII → E57
- XYZ ASCII → XYZ ASCII
- XYZ ASCII → LAS

LAS:
- LAS → E57
- LAS → XYZ ASCII
- LAS → LAS

Geometry is the primary transferable content.

Preservation of additional attributes depends on both the source and destination formats and on the active reader/writer path.

Possible affected data include:

- RGB;
- intensity;
- scanner grouping;
- row/column structure;
- Image2D blocks;
- scanner photographs;
- classifications;
- scanner-specific metadata.

Converting a format back to itself does not guarantee preservation of every original metadata block.


8. E57 Structure and RGB Compatibility

E57 files may be:

- Cartesian;
- non-Cartesian;
- structured with row/column information;
- associated with images or scanner photographs.

For Cartesian E57 files, XYZ and RGB export are normally available when valid color data is present.

For some non-Cartesian or structured E57 files, especially certain FARO-generated files, split export with RGB may produce compatibility problems in third-party software.

In such cases, CloudCutter may use a safer XYZ-only path.

The user may see a message similar to:

This specific non-Cartesian E57 will be exported without RGB in split mode. Geometry will be exported normally.

A single combined export may use a different path and may behave differently from multi-file export.

Always inspect the E57 metadata and verify the exported result.


9. Large XYZ ASCII and LAS Files

Extremely large XYZ ASCII files may require long preview times because the application must:

- parse the file line by line;
- calculate global bounds;
- build the top-view tile map;
- count points per occupied tile;
- keep a limited preview sample;
- transfer progressive preview data to the interface.

LAS is generally more compact and faster to read than equivalent XYZ ASCII data, but very large LAS files can still create a large occupied-tile map.

A very small coarse tile size may create millions of tile entries and cause:

- high memory consumption;
- long insertion and rehash operations;
- expensive preview snapshots;
- long progressive-refresh pauses;
- very long total processing time.

For very large XYZ ASCII or LAS files, use a larger coarse tile size, for example 10–20 m or more depending on scene extent.

A coarse first cut can then be refined using the smaller exported result.


10. Processing and Progress

Preview and export may take a long time for very large files.

CloudCutter reports important stages such as:

- preview preparation;
- selection availability;
- full source reading;
- processed point count;
- export method;
- export success or failure.

Some stages may still have limited percentage or remaining-time estimation.

Do not close the application while a background preview or export is running unless cancellation is explicitly available.


11. Input and Output Path Settings

CloudCutter may remember the last selected input file and output folder in:

DLL\settings.ini

A clean distribution package should contain:

[Paths]
InputE57Path=
OutputFolder=

The application updates these values during normal use.

Do not distribute a package containing personal, internal, network, removable-drive, or test paths.

An unavailable path saved in settings.ini may also delay the Windows file-selection dialog.


12. Portable Package Requirements

The supplied folder structure must remain unchanged.

The main launcher is:

CLOUDCUTTER_V1_1-beta.bat

The application executable is located in:

DLL\e57_cutter_trial.exe

The EXE must remain together with:

- pdalcpp.dll;
- E57Format.dll;
- Xerces-C runtime;
- PDAL plugins;
- Microsoft runtime libraries;
- the other supplied DLL files.

Do not copy only the EXE to another folder.

Do not run the application directly from the ZIP archive.


13. Windows and Antivirus Warnings

Windows or antivirus software may inspect a newly downloaded application before launch.

This can cause:

- a SmartScreen warning;
- a short delay during the first launch;
- a short delay before the file-selection dialog appears;
- antivirus quarantine for a new or low-distribution executable.

Use only an archive obtained from the official source.

Compare the archive SHA-256 checksum with the value published by VoxelStudio.

Do not disable antivirus protection globally.


14. Beta Status

CloudCutter_E57 V1.1 Trial is a beta release.

Possible limitations include:

- unexpected UI behavior in edge cases;
- long processing times for very large scans;
- slow preview generation for multi-billion-point XYZ ASCII files;
- large occupied-tile maps for extreme datasets;
- interruptions caused by unusual or damaged source files;
- reduced metadata preservation for some E57 structures;
- RGB limitations in split export for certain non-Cartesian E57 files;
- incomplete time-remaining estimates;
- workflow changes in future revisions.


15. Recommended Production Practice

For important work:

- keep the original source file unchanged;
- work on a copy whenever possible;
- test a smaller region first;
- use a suitable coarse tile size;
- inspect source metadata;
- verify every exported file in CloudCompare or another independent viewer;
- confirm geometry, bounds, point count, and RGB;
- retain relevant logs when reporting a problem.

The Trial is intended for evaluation and testing. Exported data must be independently validated before production use.


16. Problem Reporting

When reporting an issue, include:

- CloudCutter version;
- Windows version;
- organization name shown by the application;
- seat number;
- source format;
- output format;
- source file size;
- approximate point count;
- coarse tile size;
- selected export mode;
- whether RGB was requested;
- whether the source E57 is Cartesian or non-Cartesian;
- full console log;
- export job INI file;
- export status INI file;
- name of the external application used for validation.

Do not send:

- email verification codes;
- device-session cache files;
- private company files;
- confidential source data;

unless specifically requested through a trusted support channel.
